A bronze, sculptured bust of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr is presented to each of the Recognition Award winners at the luncheon. The Youth Scholarship winners are also acknowledged at this time. A diverse gathering of representatives of government, business, community-based organizations and Nassau County residents demonstrate their appreciation for the achievements of the awardees and scholarship recipients, by their presence and support. A souvenir journal is distributed to all attendees, to commemorate the event.
Students in Nassau County schools compete in an Essay Competitons each year, and winners are awarded scholaraships in varying amounts, the maximum being $5,000.00. Over the years, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brithday Celebration Committee of Nassau County, Inc. has dispensed over $250,000.00 in scholarships to our bright, creative, deserving young people.
Scholarship Application Packets are distributed to 43 Nassau County schools and are usually available in Guidance Offices. The deadline for 2012 awards is October 15, 2011.
